Fostex's smallest, mostaffordable stand-alone digital multitrack is based on the recorder section oftheir FD8 portable digital multitracker, and is also similar in operation tothe professional D108 digital. TheVR800 records up to eight tracks of 16-bit digital audio, at 44.1kHz, to anoptional internal IDE or suitable external SCSI hard drive (fixed orremovable). It also provides 16 virtual tracks, allowing different takes to berecorded alongside the main tracks and tucked away on the hard drive. The besteight takes are then assigned to the recorder's playback tracks for mixing. The VR800 also offersa compressed mode which more than triples recording time. Where full-bandwidthmode fits 17 track minutes into 100Mb of HD space, compressed mode fits 67minutes. Fostex make some of thebest, friendliest and most stable hard-disk multitracks around, and the VR800continues their great record and is generally a joy to use. Its editingfacilities are almost exactly what's needed, and the additional tracks proveimmensely useful. Audio quality, even in compressed mode, is beyond reproach,and the recorder itself is mechanically very quiet -- much quieterthan a computer-based HD system. The VC8 offers three input modes, for use with stereo, 4-bus or8-bus analogue mixers.
